Role Overview As a Structures Crew Chief you will lead a team through complex maintenance tasks on commercial aircraft, ensuring quality, safety and efficiency at every step. You will train and support your crew, coordinate daily work and act as the key link between planning and execution. The Crew Chief is responsible to the Supervisor or Manager for the overall operation of the crew, and Lead duties are assigned or reassigned by the Supervisor or Manager. (The term Lead encompasses all Leads in the Maintenance Organization in accordance with section 1.1.2.) Key Responsibilities Ensure each individual performing maintenance in the team is qualified for the assigned customer programme and capable of performing the job properly, assessing the operator's required training against the employee's specific skills and knowledge Provide on-the-job training and technical assistance to crew personnel Evaluate crew performance and make recommendations to the supervisor as necessary Perform only work authorised by the supervisor, to the standards of good workmanship required by VT Mobile Aerospace Engineering, Inc. (VT MAE) Ensure all tools and equipment used by the crew are kept serviceable and stored in an orderly manner Recommend any requirements or improvements for the crew to the supervisor Exercise control over stock checked out of the stockroom by crew employees Complete crew timecards and approve all hours worked Report personnel problems that cannot be resolved within the crew, with recommendations, and recommend disciplinary action where required Assist the supervisor in evaluating non-routine work cards for parts, man-hours and span time, and indicate corrective action Continuously monitor work progress, keep the supervisor apprised of status (particularly on jobs off schedule) and assist in preparing shift status and change-over reports Ensure all work tasks requiring a co-signer are properly signed by the end of the shift Read, interpret and work from Service Bulletins, ADs, EOs and EAs Plan and schedule assigned tasks and ensure goals are met Communicate with internal groups (Planning, Materials, Fabrication and others) about aircraft issues, and with customers and engineers about aircraft sheet metal work Remain attentive to the assigned job budget as well as the planned aircraft budget Perform any other work assigned by the supervisor Requirements Proficient working knowledge of all lower sheet metal job skill progression titles, and good working knowledge of (or ability to acquire) the skills of a Lead Mechanic Proficient detailed blueprint reading and the ability to read, interpret and work from service bulletins, engineering work orders and major SRM structural repairs Ability to lay out work using bend radius, set back and bend allowance charts, and to apply shop math Ability to install and/or splice spars, work on landing gear and trunnion changes, and carry out pressure bulkhead repairs and keel beam repairs, removal and reinstallation Ability to learn skills across narrow-body and wide-body commercial aircraft Knowledge of ATA codes and of all applicable FARs and company policies and procedures, including job clocking, routine and non-routine cards, and work sign-off and sell-off procedures Supervision: under direction, normally performing duties according to own judgement and requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary; assignments are frequently reviewed upon completion Interpersonal relations: a moderate level of interpersonal skill is required to maintain effective relationships with co-workers and supervision Physical environment: mobility around various sections of aircraft and dexterity to extract and replace parts promptly; ability to cope with stress and long working hours; capacity to gain information by hearing for personal safety given the dangers of shop equipment; standing 90% of the workday on hard surfaces; must be able to lift 50 lbs and report to work regularly Licences & Qualifications High school diploma or GED Licence: Airframe licence and/or Repairman Certificate (must understand, read and write English in accordance with 14 CFR Part 145) Experience 4 years of heavy commercial aircraft maintenance experience, with heavy commercial experience in the structures field required What We Offer Medical, vision and dental insurance 401(k) with employer match Paid time off (PTO) Company-provided uniforms 6 nationally recognised holidays Short-term and long-term disability insurance Life insurance Company-sponsored events throughout the year Additional Information Background and drug screening: successful completion of a background check and drug screening is a mandatory condition of employment.
