Materials Engineer

Location: Filton (Hybrid - approx. 60% onsite, initially 100% for handover)
Contract: Maternity cover - until March 2027 (likely extension)
Working Pattern: 35 Hours per week, worked over 4.5 days (between 7am-7pm, hours

agreed by the business)
Pay Rate: £35.00 per hour (Umbrella) / £26.16 per hour (PAYE)

Clearance: BPSS (completed by the Client)
IR35: Inside IR35

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced Assembly Technologies Specialist/Materials Engineer to join their Research & Technology (R&T) function. This role sits at the forefront of future manufacturing development and will play a key part in researching, developing and validating innovative assembly technologies for next‑generation aerospace production.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical understanding of assembly processes and materials, combined with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Research, develop and evaluate novel assembly technologies and manufacturing processes
  • Plan, design and execute experimental trials and industrial use cases
  • Assess feasibility, performance and industrial applicability of new technologies
  • Analyse trial data and translate results into actionable technical insights
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, and research teams to mature future production solutions
  • Develop technical documentation, specifications and best-practice guidance

Skills & Experience Required

  • Proven experience in assembly process development within engineering or manufacturing
  • Strong knowledge of assembly techniques such as riveting, fastening systems and joining methods
  • Understanding of materials, particularly composites (aerospace experience beneficial but not essential)
  • Experience working in R&D or Research & Technology environments
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within cross‑functional teams
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical and communication skills
