Job Description

About the Company Safair Operations, operating as FlySafair, is a South African airline operating a Boeing 737 fleet. Role Overview FlySafair has a vacancy for First Officers at its bases in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Lanseria. The successful applicant will report to the Fleet Captain. Three positions are available. Key Responsibilities Operations Ensure safety of flight in a timely manner. Monitor the flight path and systems of the aircraft. Perform checks and procedures before, during and after each flight. Navigate and operate the flight, and communicate with internal departments, external service providers and passengers. Ensure compliance with regulations and company policies and procedures. Uphold the company's core competitive edge, namely excellent customer service. Submit accurate and complete legal administrative documentation. Assume command in the event of the incapacitation of the Captain. Stay updated with applicable SACAA and international aviation laws and the company operations manuals, and maintain familiarity with the provisions necessary to fulfil the required function. Assist the Captain with operational and administrative duties in relation to the flight, and in upholding a high standard of crew discipline, behaviour and personal appearance. Carry out duties in accordance with FlySafair Standard Operating Procedures, including procedures, limitations and performance relating to the specific aircraft type, plus any additional duties allocated by the Captain. Confirm the safe navigation of the aircraft, maintaining a continuous and independent check on both its geographical position and its safe terrain clearance. Volunteer advice, information and assistance to the Captain that may contribute to the safe and efficient conduct of the flight. Maintain a high personal standard of discipline, conduct and appearance as a representative of the company. Support the Captain in developing and maintaining a high standard of professional expertise and morale among the crew. Pre-flight Be fully aware of the planned flight route, the contents of briefing sheets and the forecast conditions and runway states at destination and alternate aerodromes. Perform all checks outlined in the Operations Manual and complete all required documents. Work collaboratively with the Captain to review all documents and information needed to make an informed decision on fuel selection, alternates and any restrictions on the flight. In-flight Perform or monitor the execution of all normal, abnormal and emergency checklists in the manner specified in the Operations Manual and ensure they are properly completed. Monitor all aspects of the flight, checking that correct procedures and techniques are used and cross-checking all flight instrument indications, especially altitude/height, speed and heading. Advise the Captain immediately if the aircraft deviates from the planned flight path, if the onset of a hazardous situation is observed, or if any abnormal instrument reading, warning light or indicator is detected. Conduct radiotelephony communications as and when required. Post-flight Ensure all post-flight procedures are completed as per the Operations Manual and FCOM. Submit all relevant documentation and reports, for example IQSMS. Licences & Qualifications SACAA Commercial licence (essential). SACAA ATPL (preferred). Class 1 SACAA medical (essential). Type rated on Boeing (advantageous). Grade 12 or equivalent. South African citizen with proof of identity and a valid South African passport. Own transport and a South African driver's licence. Experience Non-type rated or Boeing type rated with a minimum of 1,500 hours, which must include 500 hours multi-turbine time (essential). Multi-crew experience (essential). Experience on commercial jets over 20 tonnes (advantageous). Detailed knowledge and understanding of national aviation regulations such as SACAA and ICAO. Knowledge of Doc 8186 (essential) and of Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing content. No existing medical conditions and no criminal record; willing to undergo a drug and alcohol test. Willing to sign the applicable training bonds and to work irregular hours on a roster.
