Job Description

Role Overview The First Officer monitors the progress of assigned flights in accordance with the Airline's Operations Manual and in compliance with the respective civil aviation authority regulations. The role assists the Captain in achieving the highest levels of safety, security and efficiency throughout the flight, records and documents all necessary data, supports the flight and cabin crew, applies emergency procedures when instructed, and takes control of the flight from the Captain when instructed or required by the adopted procedures. Key Responsibilities Act as Pilot Flying or Pilot Monitoring and assist the Captain in managing flight deck work by monitoring flight progress, the efficiency of operating systems and the performance of other cockpit crew, ensuring well-balanced task distribution and systematic information exchange. When required or instructed by the Captain, fly the assigned aircraft between destinations with priorities in the order of safety, efficiency and passenger comfort. Conduct flights in accordance with the Airline's Operations Manual and regulations, applying and monitoring the procedures necessary for safe and smooth aircraft operation. Coordinate with the Captain and the Dispatch team before each flight so crew are well prepared and informed on aircraft technical status, route preferences, weather, fuel, weight and distribution of roles. Carry out the necessary checks, records and documentation tasks, such as take-off data, fuel requirements and the ATS flight plan. Use the adopted systems and forms to record data such as the logbook and computerised flight plan; verify calculated data against assumed data and obtain the Captain's signature. At stations without qualified personnel, check the fuel type and supervise refuelling, ensuring proper fuel distribution. Alert the Captain to any irregularities or unfavourable variables that may affect safety; apply the actions instructed by the Captain and assist the crew in responding to safety or security irregularities. Undertake additional ground-based tasks such as Safety Officer or Security Officer as directed by the Head of Flight Operations and in accordance with Part A of the Operations Manual. Keep up to date with the legal requirements of the various regulatory bodies, including the civil aviation authority and Airbus, and attend recurrent and competency-based training planned by the Training Department. Check the prescribed manuals, charts, maps and forms and ensure the Operations Manual is distributed, accounted for, maintained, updated and complied with for the current and next flight; where this is not attainable, ensure the security of the aircraft until it returns to home base. Assist the Captain in completing records and reports such as the voyage report, aircraft flight log, and safety and discretion reports, and deposit flight envelopes in the designated secure place after each flight. Licences & Qualifications An appropriate ATPL licence, or alternatively a CPL with frozen ATPL, is a must. Must pass the technical and psychometric assessment for co-pilots to Airline and civil aviation authority standards. Must pass the medical fitness check-up for co-pilots to Airline and civil aviation authority standards. Training in safety and emergency response is essential; a formal qualification is an advantage. Basic airport and security procedures and regulations training is an advantage. Crew Resource Management training is an advantage. Knowledge of IATA principles and standards relating to security is an advantage. Experience Minimum 1,500 hours of flying experience; Airbus A320 is preferred. Experience with a low-cost airline is highly desirable. Acceptable industry knowledge of aircraft systems and operating procedures. Knowledge and exposure to handle other delegated roles such as security or safety duties. Exposure to QA, safety, security and audit procedures and practices affecting flight operations. Capable of applying policies, procedures and manuals in line with approved standards and regulations. Requirements Proficient in using aircraft systems, Microsoft Office, the internet and web search. Very good written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing and presentations. Very good English; Arabic and French are an advantage. Able to perform in a changing environment with heavy workload schedules and ad-hoc scenarios. Composed, self-confident and focused, capable of handling emergencies and threats efficiently. Proven skills in analysing data, identifying irregularities and recommending solutions. Cost-oriented, with effective problem-solving and decision-making skills. High accuracy and attention to detail. Uses technical expertise and interpersonal skills to support company objectives and deliver against business strategy and set KPIs.
