Job Description

Role Overview Air New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from external pilots wanting to join its jet fleets. Entry as a pilot into the jet fleet is as a Second Officer on B787 or B777 aircraft, or as a First Officer on the A320/A321. Pilots are valued as leaders who understand the business and are committed to delivering exceptional service to customers; strong problem-solving skills, a clear customer focus and a friendly, can-do attitude are the attributes required to keep the airline operating at world-class levels. Recruitment for the jet fleet is subject to the Regional Pilot Priority Process (RPPP), under which jet vacancies are predominantly filled by internal transfers from the turboprop fleets. A small number of pilots are still hired from external sources from time to time, in accordance with the external eligibility criteria described in the RPPP. Requirements To be eligible to apply you must meet one of the following criteria: At least 12 months of multi-crew, multi-turbine-engine Part 121 or Part 125 (or equivalent weight category) turboprop command experience, on an aircraft with a Maximum Certified Take-Off Weight of 7,765 kg or greater (equivalent to a Beech 1900D) and operated under Instrument Flight Rules; or At least 12 months of Part 121 or Part 125 (or equivalent weight category) jet First Officer experience; or Part 121 or Part 125 (or equivalent weight category) jet captain experience; or At least 12 months of multi-crew, multi-turbine-engine fixed-wing command experience with the RNZAF or another air force, on aircraft at least equivalent in weight category to Part 121 or Part 125 (or equivalent weight category) turboprop aircraft Licences & Qualifications NZCAA ATPL, or CPL with current passes in all ATPL subjects Multi-engine instrument rating NZCAA Class 1 medical NZCAA BTK/BGT Level 6 English Language Proficiency or greater NZCAA licences are required prior to employment. Candidates undergoing conversion of an overseas-issued licence may be offered an interview in anticipation of obtaining the required NZCAA qualifications. Experience 1,500 hours total time, including 100 hours multi-engine aeroplane, 100 hours ATO (exceptions made for applicants with military experience), 40 hours instrument flight time and 25 hours night Eligibility restrictions Only New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or residents, Australian citizens, or Australian permanent residents will be considered The ability to travel overseas is required, including a valid passport and any necessary visas To support the prioritisation of internal transfers, external candidates who have operated as a turboprop pilot with Air New Zealand, Mount Cook Airline, Air Nelson or Eagle Airways within the last 8 years are not eligible What We Offer Pilots do more than fly aircraft — they take pride in providing customers with safe and enjoyable journeys across a diverse route network Favourable work conditions including flexible-flying (part-time) options and the ability to apply for a sabbatical Fatigue mitigation and wellness resources, insurance, and generous sick leave provisions Development opportunities in training, recruitment, management, working groups, projects and as brand ambassadors in community engagement A vibrant working environment with cultural, community and professional networks and interest groups to join Additional Information How to apply: all applications must be submitted online via the Apply Now button on the job posting. Please have your logbook and licence information to hand at the time of registration. Recruitment process: initial screening against minimum standards, online cognitive assessment, a two-day assessment centre held in Auckland, pre-employment checks, and an offer of employment. About the Regional Pilot Priority Process: Air New Zealand maintains two separate seniority lists, one for jet pilots and one for turboprop pilots. All new jet pilots — whether external applicants or former Air New Zealand turboprop pilots — join at the bottom of the jet seniority list. The airline prioritises hiring new jet pilots from within its turboprop ranks but can still hire up to 10% of new jet pilots externally in normal circumstances; these pilots are added below any internal turboprop pilots appointed to the same course, or to any other jet course starting the same day. If turboprop pilots cannot be released to jet roles at the required rate and the external hiring ratio has been met, external hiring can continue with places reserved on the jet seniority list for turboprop pilots on a one-to-four ratio, so that for every external pilot joining the list, four Air New Zealand turboprop pilots are added above them; those internal pilots take up active jet fleet employment when a vacancy arises for which they can be released. This priority means an external pilot joining the jet fleet is added below any internal turboprop pilots appointed to a jet course starting on the same day, including any appointed under the one-to-four ratio. Vaccination: this role is not currently covered by any New Zealand Government vaccination order or company vaccination policy. However, a COVID-19 vaccination requirement remains in place for some offshore ports, so being unvaccinated may affect which ports you can operate to and your ability to fulfil the role. Air New Zealand strongly encourages vaccination, and the role could become subject to a vaccination requirement in the future. Additional Information Air New Zealand is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can be themselves and thrive. The airline regards its people as its greatest asset, since everything else in the operation can be replicated by competitors, and it celebrates the differences and diversity of thought its people bring to their roles. Its guiding proverb translates as: "Seek to bring distant horizons closer. Once near, seize them and make them your reality."
