airBaltic is the national flag carrier of Latvia. It is the largest airline in the Baltics. The airline was founded in 1995, with a joint venture between SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) and the Latvian state. Operations started the same year when on October 1st, a Saab 340 made the first passenger flight for airBaltic. In 2003, the first Boeing 737 joined its fleet and the next year the airline began operating from Vilnius. It flew to 5 destinations at the beginning. airBaltic has a main hub at Riga International Airport and two secondary bases in the two other Baltic capitals – Vilnius and Tallinn. airBaltic runs a hybrid business model – it operates both as a low-cost carrier while still being able to provide clients with a full business class service. The airline is one of the most punctual airlines in Europe.
