Scheduled commercial flights began in 2006, with the first flight transferring passengers from Toluca to Tijuana. Volaris has 3 hubs in Guadalajara, Mexico City and Tijuana airports. Volaris serves domestic and international destinations in North and South Americas. Volaris owns about 20% of the domestic market in Mexico and the airline focuses mostly on the Mexican and American markets. It does not offer many other destinations outside these markets. Total destinations that are served by the airline is more than 60 as of 2019. Its focus cities are Cancun, Los Angeles and Monterrey, where most of Volaris‘ flights commence. Initially, the airline did not provide services to and from Mexico City International Airport because of its steep price and traffic congestion, but after one of the oldest airlines in the world, Mexicana, went bankrupt, Volaris took over their slots in the airport and started operating from Mexico City. Volaris also took over some of Mexicana‘s international routes. The airline exclusively uses the Airbus A320 family aircraft in its fleet. Volaris has more than 70 Airbus‘ in its fleet, while 80 more are ordered as of 2019. Volaris‘ fleet is very young – its aircraft, on average, is 4.6 years old.
