EgyptAir is the flag carrier airline of Egypt. It is also one of the biggest airlines in Africa. It is based in Cairo, where its hub at Cairo International Airport is also located. Its focus cities are Alexandria, Hurghada, Luxor and Sharm El Sheikh. In 1933 it commenced operations when flying from Cairo to Alexandria. Operating as MisrAir till 1957, when it merged with Syrian Airlines to create United Arab Airlines. After a few years, the airline as we know it today as Egypt Air was formed in 1971. EgyptAir now operates over 50 aircraft in its fleet, flying to more than 80 destinations around the world. Since 2008, EgyptAir is a member of Star Alliance. The airline also owns 5 subsidiary companies, from low-cost carriers to cargo airlines. Currently, EgyptAir is owned by the Egyptian government. But it operates as a separate entity with special legislation allowing it to operate without any interference from the government.
