A DAY IN THE LIFE:

The Airport Maintenance Technician performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to airfield, facilities, and ground maintenance. This includes corrective and preventative maintenance, construction, carpentry, demolition, and remodeling projects for Airport airfield and City facilities. This position inspects airport facility conditions to ensure safe, efficient airport operations and that maintenance, emergency and security functions are compatible with Local, State and Federal regulations.
  • Conducts inspections of airport facilities and grounds to ensure compliance with FAA Part 139 Certification criteria including but not limited to: runway condition reporting, airport perimeter/gate security inspections, wildlife inspection and mitigation, runway/taxiway sign & lighting inspections, airfield construction inspection, pavement inspections, runway safety area and object free zone inspections and Notice to Airman (NOTAM) reporting.
  • Performs building maintenance and repairs such as scheduled general maintenance for building components and electrical computerized controls, plumbing, interior and exterior of all structures. Performs overall maintenance of terminal; picks up and removes trash, replaces light bulbs, and performs light duty cleaning. Responds to requests from the public or tenants regarding maintenance problems. Performs skilled mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry work to construct, troubleshoot, diagnose, maintain, repair, modify, and install equipment, physical structures, pipe, and electrical systems in City facilities following specifications, blueprints, manuals, and schematic drawings.
  • Performs concrete and finish work such as sidewalks, street patch repairs, ramps, pads, and driveways; set forms, pour concrete and completes final finish work. Provides snow and ice removal during inclement weather. Performs airfield grounds maintenance such as tree removal, grading of safety areas, weed spraying and mowing, trenching, and general airfield grooming. Performs repair of potholes with cold or hot mix asphalt; pavement maintenance and repair; paints markings, repairs and replaces signs and posts; plows snow and applies deicing agents for ice control; sweeps paved areas.
  • Performs general maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as safety, oil and operation checks. Performs general maintenance and minor repair on heavy equipment such as brooms, front-end loaders, and snow plows. Repair and maintenance of mowers and other grounds related equipment; Carries emergency communications device (mobile phone/radio) so as to respond to aircraft incidents/accidents and/or maintenance emergencies; Participates in the after-hours emergency plan. Enforces airfield rules and regulations; Coordinates with Tower when on the airfield with contractors.
  • Inspects airport facilities on foot or in motor vehicle, reports deficiencies, corrects and initiates follow up corrective action; Performs airfield inspections and is responsible for posting NOTAMS in changing weather conditions, maintenance and security inspections on gates and fence lines. May suspend operation off runways or taxiways during maintenance; Maintains detailed written daily operations log/shift summary of inspections, incident reports and aircraft activity reports.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED FOR SUCCESS:
  • Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Experience: Three (3) or more years of responsible experience in building and mechanical equipment maintenance and repair is required. Similar or related experience in the areas of airport operations and maintenance at an FAA Part 139 airport is preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid Kansas Class B Commercial Driver's License (C.D.L.) is required within 6 months of the hire date. Right-of-way chemical application license (ROW) is required within 1 year of the hire date.
