Air Canada Maintenance is seeking an enthusiastic, highly skilled individual to join our Engineering & Reliability Team. Reporting to the Manager Structures Engineering, the Tooling Engineering Specialist enjoys a broad scope of responsibility and works closely with the Tooling Manager, Aircraft Servicing Equipment (ASE) department, aircraft tooling manufacturers, and suppliers to ensure Tooling is maintained to the highest standards, ready to support aircraft maintenance activities.  
 
The qualified incumbent will be responsible for tooling reliability and modification, configuration management, cost control and process improvement related to tooling.  In addition, the candidate may gain exposure to aircraft engineering and reliability. 
 
This engineering job includes direct support to operations, therefore travel and flexible work schedules required.
 
Key Functions & Accountabilities:  
  • Develop robust tooling maintenance programs based on OEM recommendations and industry standards 
  • Manage development and certification of novel and custom tooling to support the dynamic needs of aircraft line maintenance activities 
  • Manage tooling configuration and maintenance specifications 
  • Ensure compliance with evolving regulatory and corporate requirements. 
  • Resolve root cause of potential safety and reliability issues 
  • Develop and certify configuration changes as required. 
  • Control operational, tooling costs and optimize use of corporate resources 
  • Support downstream departments in the execution of tooling activities   
  • Develop practical, cost-effective repairs and preventative actions 
  • Consult with tooling manufacturers as required 
  • Review, develop and present financial approvals for the implementation of tooling safety, reliability improvements 
  • Preparation of engineering calculations and / or tests and related reports. 
  • Preparation of repairs instructions, processes and procedures as required. 
  • Provide technical support to ASE and act as technical interface between the airline and OEM/Vendors 
  • Support Safety Investigations of tooling related issues. 
  • Maintain knowledge of Canada Occupational Health and Safety and Transport Canada regulations affecting area of expertise. 
  • Provide technical and troubleshooting guidance to maintenance personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering recognized by a Canadian university or provincial engineering association. 
  • Minimum of 3 years practical experience with tooling and/or engineering. 
  • Project Management experience is an asset. 
  • Ability to analyze and interpret technical documentation 
  • Basic stress analysis skills 
  • Candidates must be members or qualify for admission to a provincial engineering professional association. 
  • Team player with strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.   
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.  
  • Ability to develop and write clear, concise technical descriptions, instructions, information sheets, reports and engineering drawings. 
  • Must be able to work independently, multi-task, work under pressure and accommodate changing priorities. 
  • Willingness to be on call and to work flexible hours at and away from home base, as required by day-to-day operational needs. 
  • Availability to travel for training, industry meetings, operational/modification support, etc. 
  • Familiarity and knowledge with PC-based software. 
  • Must be clear of any restrictions which will prevent entry into other countries, and any restrictions that may deny access to OEM data. 
  • Aviation experience (asset) 
  • Proficient in 2D and 3D modeling using AutoCAD or similar PC-based software (asset) 
  • Familiarity with OSHA, Canada Occupational Health and Safety and Transport Canada regulations (asset) 
  • Knowledge of configuration management. (asset) 
  • Based on equal qualifications, preference will be given to bilingual candidates (French and English)
