The Manager, Waste Management & Circularity Programs leads the development and delivery of waste management programs within the Corporation and its subsidiaries system wide to ensure environmental regulatory compliance and to meet formally stated environmental goals of the Corporation within the following key areas (but not limited to): 
  • Onboard waste reduction and recycling (domestic and international) 
  • Office and airport facility waste reduction and recycling 
  • Electronic waste recycling 
  • Regulated single-use plastics and waste stewardship program compliance; and 
  • Specific aviation-related circular economy opportunities (e.g.  Uniform recycling, onboard product reuse and donation, and end of life planning for aircraft).
Key Functions & Accountabilities:
 
Responsibility (utilization of company assets) 
Responsible for the management, performance, and results of one position under direct supervision.  
 
Responsible for the development and implementation of waste management compliance programs in co-operation with the branches and subsidiaries to ensure compliance with applicable environmental regulations. 
  • Conducts evaluation of regulatory requirements and interfaces with government agencies. Ensures that appropriate control measures for all environmental and significant environmental aspects are in place to limit any possible liability to the Corporation.  
  • Assists Branches or subsidiaries in the development of programs and updating of all specific environmental operational policies and procedures. Ensures current policies and procedures comply with the applicable EMS standard to ensure compliance with Federal, State, Provincial, municipal and city laws. 
  • Documents and submits reports and information to the regulatory agencies. 
Responsible for the development and implementation of waste management programs, including the Leave Less Cabin initiative, in co-operation with the branches and subsidiaries to meet goals and objectives in support of formally stated environmental goals of the Corporation and mitigating reputation risk to the Corporation. 
  • Develops project scopes and objectives with internal and external stakeholders input and ensures technical feasibility. Provides expertise in the selection of appropriate waste program opportunities for the Corporation including selection of environmental criteria for the procurement of alternative products. 
  • Develops project plan and tracks progress toward achievement of objectives and targets. Prepares reports for senior management on progress and options for improvement.  
  • Conducts waste audits and tracks, trends and analyzes relevant data for performance measurement and reporting (such as Global Reporting Index, other), and maintains waste data collection system. 
  • Conducts research analysis to develop strategies for policy development. 
Responsible for the development and implementation of environmental awareness and training programs related to waste management. Provides direction and advice to all Branches or subsidiaries on environmental training requirements and programs.
 
Develops communications and awareness materials geared toward a variety of stakeholders, including internal branches as part of EMS requirements and engages employees around waste management practices to help build a culture of environmental stewardship and to drive performance within Air Canada. 
 
Ensures all policy and program documentation is maintained up to date within requirements of the EMS. 
 
Responsible for managing outside consultants as applicable to waste management programs. This would include vendor identification, RFP development, selection, and ongoing oversight and management of vendor work.  
 
Acts as representative of the Corporation at meetings related to waste management and assigned regulatory programs with regulatory agencies, with airport authorities, and at various industry associations (i.e., IATA, NACC).     
 
Assists the Director, Environmental Compliance in the preparation of quarterly environmental reports to the Corporate Safety and Environmental Board and the Safety, Health, Environment and Security Committee of the Board of Directors.  
 
Assists the Director Environmental Compliance in the determination of consequential cost and process implications related to waste management programs and ensures the development of plans and the allocation of appropriate funds to address upcoming changes. 
 
Develops and maintains a strong network of internal contacts within key Branches (CRE, Finance, Operating Branches, Corporate Groups, etc.) and a strong network of professional contacts in the field of waste management/recycling/stewardship through business networks, regulators, and existing project work in order to optimize Air Canada’s environmental efforts. 
 
Continually maintain a high level of professional proficiency and knowledge of all applicable environmental matters, sustainability requirements, technologies and developments. Shares good practices and problems/lessons learned with colleagues, branches, and alliance carriers.

Qualifications

  • University degree(s) required – University degree in Earth Sciences, Environmental Studies or related discipline 
  • Linguistic requirements (Proficiency level 1-4) 
  • Level 4- English , Level 3 - French 
Experience/Business Knowledge:  
  • Minimum five 7 to 10 years of related environmental experience including experience in solid waste management and recycling programs 
  • Project management experience 
  • Strong knowledge of sustainable development, waste management practices, circular economy and environmental protection management, environmental compliance requirements, trends and issues in waste and recycling management nationally and internationally 
  • Working knowledge of data collection/IT systems for tracking and proficiency in Microsoft Office software and Power Bi 
  • A demonstrated ability to influence, persuade and convince others and develop, engage, and maintain effective partnerships with diverse stakeholder groups   
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as facilitation and training skills. 
  • Initiative, persistence, engagement, and independence.  
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally
