USA: New screening procedures tested at 4 airports for people over 75 and children
It seems like the public outcry against certain screening procedures at airports in the US (especially when if comes to the elderly population and children, which is a lower risk population) is finally heard.
There have been several cases of older people complaining about humiliating searches, and the very publicized video of a 6 year old girl bursting into tears because of a thorough and traumatic pat-down. The new procedures will be implemented at Chicago's O'Hare International, Denver International, Orlando International and Portland International, because they have a higher rate of people over 75 years old. To decrease the number of searches given to children and older travelers, employees in the test programs are supposed to send them through metal detectors or walk-through imaging machines several times. They should also use explosive trace detection tools... This could lead to less pat-downs and clothes removal. Frequent travelers might also get pre-aproved, and could go through a less invasive search process (No shoes removal, and the laptop could stay in its case). What do you think about those measures? Do you think they are compromising security, or is this something that they should have done long ago? |
